A location with a number of holiday cottages needed WiFi to each cottage but couldn't realistically cable them due to the distances and the need to hide cables or not have any at all which was not an easy ask but we managed it by using Point-To-Point (PTP) kit which does away with cables

The problem the owners were facing was not so much that cabling wasn't possible but more to do with the fact that it wasn't practical or sightly. Not only that, but the cables that were there were hidden behind some bushes, shrubbery and plants and when those got trimmed, so did the cables.

The remit was to get rid of the cables which were now hanging down the side of buildings and, over the course of time, started to look less sightly. We then had to ensure each holiday cottage and the lovely swimming pool had a solid and reliable WiFi signal that all guests could enjoy.

We achieved this by using Cambium Point To Point networking kit that allowed us to relay the Internet signal, wirelessly, from a central location to multiple receving points. From the receiving points we could then drop a short cable into each location and provide wireless access via a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR access point.

No Line Of Sight For Some Locations

Creating a Point To Point wireless network when there is line of sight makes life easy but some of the locations had no line of sight and we had to create multiple "hops" which meant sending the WiFi signal to one receiver, which relayed that signal to another sending device which then, in turn, relayed it to another receiver with almost no drop in signal strength.

Point To Point wireless diagram

In the diagram above, you can see how we get around a Point to Point or Point to Multipoint wireless network when there is no line of sight.

We start with the Main Office which is where the Internet is coming into the property and we have to distribute that signal to the holiday cottages around the site wirelessly. However, Cottages 4 and 5 are hidden by Cottage 3 which prevents line of sight. Therefore we have to relay the signal from Cottage 2

The above scenario is an example but larger scenarios could require more hops and relays.
